Dear SydPhilers As some of you have noticed, some users are presently
unable to get to the list information page at http://lists.arts.usyd.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/sydphil
or http://bit.ly/sydphil.
Apologies for the inconvenience, our helpful IT folk are
working on the problem. (At present, these addressess work
for USyd users, but only so long as they are on campus or
using VPN.) Fortunately it is still possible to interact with the software that runs SydPhil by email. (Those of you with long memories and a lot of miles on the clock may recall that this is how all mailing lists were controlled, back in the days before the information superhighway.) Here are some basic tips, to get you started. HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM SYDPHIL Send an email to sydphil-leave@arts.usyd.edu.au, from the email address that you subscribed in the first place -- i.e., the one that currently gets your messages from SydPhil. (It doesn't matter what you put in the subject line or the body of the message.) After a few minutes, you'll get a reply, giving you several options for confirming the request to unsubscribe. One option tells you to click on a link in the email, but if you can't get to the information page in the first place (and if you could do that, why would you be reading this?), that link won't work. Never fear, the email tells you how to confirm the request by email -- in most cases, you just need to hit "Reply". A few minutes later, you should get an email confirming that you have been unsubscribed. HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO SYDPHIL Same as for unsubscribing, except you send your email to sydphil-join@arts.usyd.edu.au. HOW TO CHANGE YOUR OPTIONS IN ANY OTHER WAY Send an email to sydphil-request@arts.usyd.edu.au with the subject line "help" (without the quotation marks). After a few minutes, you'll get an email back describing all the email commands. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER Please don't send these
requests, or any
other admin requests, to the address sydphil@arts.usyd.edu.au
-- mail sent there gets distributed to the entire list.
Trouble posting a message to SydPhil? Here are two most
common queries: WHY CAN'T I
POST A MESSAGE TO THE LIST? If you have subscribed successfully, but get a message in
response to a post saying that you are not authorised to
post to the list, then
you are trying to post from a different address from the
one you subscribed. The addresses
"yourname@usyd.edu.au" and "yourname@sydney.edu.au" are
different, for example. Your email server may know that
they belong to the same person, but the mailing list
software doesn't. The easiest solution is to use the instructions above to
subscribe the address from which you are trying to post.
Just send an email from that address to
sydphil-join@arts.usyd.edu.au, and wait for the
confirmation instructions, as above. (You'll then be
subscribed twice, but you can use the instructions above
to change your options, so that only one address gets mail
from the list.) WHY CAN'T I
POST A MESSAGE WITH A BIG ATTACHMENT? Because SydPhil doesn't like big attachments (and leaves even small attachments out of messages, in Digest mode). Please put your attachment online somewhere (the public folder in Dropbox provides one easy way to do this), and include a link in your message to the list.
